Ever since Disney Investor Day 2020, Star Wars fans have wondered about the status of various projects announced for Disney+ and beyond. There are a variety of shows and movies coming to Disney+ next year, many of which had previously already been announced. But the streaming platform tried (and failed) to sneak an announcement into a new video posted to Twitter earlier today: official confirmation that Star Wars: Andor isn’t as far off as we may have originally thought.
The final moments of the highlight reel confirm that Andor will be part of the Star Wars lineup in 2022 alongside the first season of The Book of Boba Fett and The Bad Batch Season 2.
In terms of Star Wars content specifically, the video included footage to promote The Book of Boba Fett, which premieres at the absolute tail end of 2021 on December 29, and the second season of The Bad Batch, though an official release date for the animated series has yet to be announced.
Other Disney-owned content, such as material from the MCU, is also on the schedule for 2022. But after months of rumors about Andor and endless questions about whether or not the show would be ready in time for a 2022 release, it’s encouraging to know that we will be seeing Cassian (Diego Luna) and K2-SO (Alan Tudyk) in live-action again presumably before next Christmas (though they could sneak it into the year’s final days again, as evidenced by our friend Boba).
Based on what we know from Investor Day and vague updates since, the Rogue One prequel will function like a spy thriller within the Star Wars TV universe. We know that Cassian at one time was part of the Fulcrum network of informants, so the show has the potential to dive more into the lengths the Rebel Alliance went to gather the intel they needed to overthrow the Empire.
