This post contains spoilers for Chapter 1 of The Book of Boba Fett.

The opening moments of The Book of Boba Fett finally provide a canon explanation for how Boba Fett escaped the Sarlacc pit, an on-screen sequence Star Wars fans have been begging for ever since the reveal that he was still alive.

Throughout the remainder of the episode, Fett is seen undergoing healing treatments in a bacta pod. However, it’s unclear whether these treatments are because of the Sarlacc, the wounds he accumulated after his escape, or both. If the series’ creators are pulling straight from Star Wars Legends, his injuries could stem more from the Sarlacc than anything else. And it could mean this really is the final chapter of Boba Fett’s story after all.

In Legends continuity, Fett was also forced to undergo extensive treatment to avoid developing a rare form of cancer because of how spending time in the Sarlacc pit impacted him physically. The acid from the creature altered his metabolism which, years after his escape, finally began to deteriorate his body.

Though the Legends timeline ended before the final cause of Boba Fett’s death could be revealed, it’s possible that The Book of Boba Fett could use the episodes to come to chronicle the final days of Fett’s life. Boba Fett may not survive his own show. But that seems fitting for him, considering all he’s been through just in “Stranger in a Strange Land” alone.

There are many things Fett has escaped in his lifetime, and his determination to survive despite the odds is one of many reasons he has become an iconic Star Wars character over the decades. But even someone as legendary as Boba Fett can’t survive forever. He may have narrowly avoided being digested over 1,000 years. But he may have to pay the price for cheating death again … by not being able to this one final time.
