Will the Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer air during the Super Bowl?
By Meg Dowell
This past week, Star Wars fans finally got one of the answers they’ve been looking for: The official Obi-Wan Kenobi release date. But the timing of this news is highly suspicious — and not just because it came the same day that The Book of Boba Fett aired its highly-anticipated finale.
Because the Super Bowl is taking place on February 13 — just days after the Kenobi news dropped unexpectedly — many are speculating that the first trailer for the series will air during a commercial break at some point in the game. Here’s why that may not actually be the case.
When it comes to show and movie marketing over the past few years, Star Wars hasn’t had the best reputation. Many still blame the box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story partially on “bad” marketing. But one could also make the argument that for Star Wars projects, something like a trailer doesn’t need to be released months in advance. Fans are going to likely watch it anyway … because it’s Star Wars.
Perhaps the heads behind marketing know this — and that’s why the first official trailer for The Book of Boba Fett wasn’t released until November 1, 2021 — despite the show premiering on Disney+ on December 29, just shy of two months later.
If we expect the same release pattern for Obi-Wan Kenobi, that would mean we couldn’t count on a full trailer until the end of March at the absolute earliest. Likely, we won’t get something until April 2022. Which means, in terms of an actual trailer, the Super Bowl isn’t a likely bet.
This doesn’t mean we won’t see one of those classic “reveals nothing new but still cool” teasers tonight. But don’t count on it. Not quite yet.
While it is unlikely we’ll see a trailer tonight, don’t worry! The show is only just over three months away, which means we’ll likely get a trailer within the next month or so.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow and stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. The series premieres exclusively on Disney+ May 25, 2022.
