While no one can deny the joy of seeing Din Djarin and Grogu reunite in The Book of Boba Fett, their reunion does cheapen The Mandalorian season 2 finale “The Rescue.”

“The Rescue” was a momentous episode of The Mandalorian featuring the emotional separation of Din Djarin and Grogu. It was a profoundly bittersweet moment when they parted ways. Given the strong bond they formed with each other, it was heartbreaking to see them having to say goodbye to each other, not knowing when or if they would ever see each other again.

It was also a moment that showed a lot of character development as they made a difficult choice that was best for both of them. Din even violated the Mandalorian Creed and took off his helmet so the last thing Grogu would see of him is his face.

From a storytelling perspective, Grogu leaving Din and going off with Luke Skywalker was a bold and exciting choice. Grogu had been such a big part of The Mandalorian and of Din’s identity. No one knew what Din would be like and what The Mandalorian might look like without Grogu being at the forefront of everything.

While no one expected Din and Grogu to never see each other again, there was a sense of finality in the last scene of The Mandalorian season 2 finale. The scene is still moving and demonstrates great character development, but it is no longer as impactful due to The Book of Boba Fett.

The Book of Boba Fett rushed the story of Din and Grogu being separated. “Return of the Mandalorian” does an excellent job of exploring Din’s struggle to figure out who he is without Grogu. That struggle continues in the next episode “From the Desert Comes a Stranger.” This episode also shows Grogu training with Luke Skywalker and presents Grogu with the choice of either being a Mandalorian or a Jedi.

Then the next and final episode opens with Grogu having made his choice to be a Mandalorian and later on, reuniting with Din. The audience only sees Din figuring out who he is without Grogu over the span of just a couple of episodes, a storyline and arc that deserved more time and exploration.

With the iconic duo back together, the status quo has been reset for season 3 of The Mandalorian, and Din and Grogu were given very little time to be challenged and to grow as characters during their separation. Their reunion was inevitable, but it would’ve felt sweeter and more earned with more time apart.

“The Rescue” is still an incredible episode and Din and Grogu’s farewell scene is a big part of that. Yet,  it’s not quite as strong of an episode as it was before The Book of Boba Fett, knowing that Din and Grogu’s life-changing moment will be undone in just a couple of episodes and before the next season of The Mandalorian even begins.
