When Star Wars fans learned that the highly-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series was only months away from release, very few expected the first teaser trailer to drop less than a month later. But that’s exactly what happened today.
The brand-new teaser trailer, which you can watch below, premiered during the Disney Investor Day 2022 call earlier this afternoon.
Many things revealed in this morning’s EW slideshow appeared on-screen for the first time above, including the new inquisitor and Uncle Owen. But the Grand Inquisitor also made his first live-action appearance. This is also the first time we’ve heard Ewan’s voice as Obi-Wan in this era — he could be heard in the sequel trilogy, but only briefly.
The trailer further confirms that the series will not take place entirely on Tatooine, showing several other locations throughout. However, it does also feature plenty of the desert planet and the various ways the Empire’s hold on the galaxy may be having a negative impact on it.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about the series, but the trailer does give us more insight into how big of a role the inquisitors will play in the progression of Obi-Wan’s story. This isn’t going to be a show featuring the former Jedi Master sitting around in the sand musing over his mistakes. He’s going to have to face them head-on if he’s going to fulfill his promise of protecting Luke Skywalker from danger.
Obi-Wan Kenobi stars Ewan McGregor with appearances by Hayden Christensen and Kumail Nanjiani and is directed by Deborah Chow, who previously directed an episode of The Mandalorian. The series is set to premiere May 25, 2022 exclusively on Disney+.
