Since 2011, Funko has produced hundreds of Star Wars POP! bobblehead figures of the franchise’s many characters. A new collection is on the horizon, and it’s impossible to know exactly what its six releases will look like (literally and figuratively).
Last week, StarWars.com announced the new Power of the Galaxy line of Funko POP! figures. The Revenge of the Sith-era Padmé Amidala figure is the first of six new Star Wars bobblehead models releasing from July through the end of 2022 — and even though we don’t know who the other five characters will be, history points toward characters who already have Funko POP! figures. And that’s … fine. I guess.
There are technically only two POP! figures of Padmé not including the newly announced one — if you count the Queen Amidala figure, that is. The other is a version of her from Attack of the Clones. So this isn’t the first Padmé Funko. Which make you wonder: Will the other Power of the Galaxy figures also be of characters who already have POP! versions?
The reality is, hardcore collectors will immediately grab all of these releases no matter what. But Funko and Lucasfilm have an opportunity to give other characters the bobblehead treatment — why not take it?
What about Asajj Ventress? Shmi Skywalker? Beru? Breha? Power of the Galaxy was created to celebrate the empowering women of Star Wars. But do we really need another Leia, Rey, or Ahsoka? These are amazing characters — they’re iconic for a reason. But there are nine Ahsoka Funkos on my shelf right now with three duplicates on my desk staring me down as I type this. I have zero complaints about that. I just don’t personally need more when there are so many other women from Star Wars who don’t have any yet.
Even though Funko knows completionist collectors will still pay for another Ahsoka or another Leia, there are fans out there who have been asking for an Asajj Funko POP! since before The Clone Wars ended. Just because releasing new figures of already-released characters works doesn’t mean it’s the only strategy.
We have an Aurra Sing and a Frog Lady, after all. Anything is possible. Go big!
