Meet Dathan and Miramir – Rey Skywalker’s parents. They’re the subject of a new excerpt from Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher, which is due out on June 28.

With the storyline of the new adult novel focusing on Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian investigating and searching for the planet Exegol and running into a Sith assassin hunting a family, it’s been heavily speculated that Shadow of the Sith would finally reveal more about Rey’s parents, including their names.

Much of that speculation came from Christopher himself, who teased the reveals would come during exchanges with fans in April. After that, it was all but confirmed we’d learn more about Rey’s parents and Ochi of Bestoon’s mission to hunt them down.

The latest excerpt from Shadow of the Sith, shared by USA Today, features Dathan, Miramir, and 6-year-old Rey on the run in a junky old ship from Unkar Plutt’s scrapyard on Jakku. By this time, they had traveled two days away from the desert planet and into Wild Space to hide and give them some time to come up with a plan.

"“Just a few hours earlier, they dared to think that maybe . . . they’d made it? They’d gotten out of their homestead, their all-purpose house droid, handcrafted from more scrap and salvage, sacrificing itself as it led the hunters astray. Then they found the ship (truth be told, they had long ago earmarked it for such a day—a day they hoped would never come). Launched it, just themselves, a bag of toys and books and a handful of credits, the clothes on their backs. Pointed the navicomputer along a vector that would take them way out of range (so they hoped). And buckled in for the ride.”"

The excerpt also gives a few precious details about Dathan’s and Miramir’s personalities and motivations. From Dathan’s point of view, he describes his wife as a genius and capable of fixing and flying anything. When asked who taught her these talents, Miramir would mention her grandmother, but nothing more.

The excerpt also shows that Miramir is from Hyperkarn, a place that appears to be new to the Star Wars galaxy.

As for Dathan, the excerpt gives a tiny glimpse of this character’s understanding of who and what he is, and where he came from.

"“To be homesick, to miss something that you could never return to—that was something unknown to him. Oh sure, he could understand it. And yes, he felt something for his days on Hyperkarn, even the years on Jakku, but he wasn’t sure it was the same. Neither of those places had been truly home.He did have a home, a place he could legitimately say he came from. It was a place he revisited a lot, in dreams.Dreams . . . and nightmares.”"

The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Rey is the granddaughter of Palpatine, a.k.a. Darth Sidious and the galaxy’s former emperor. The film and subsequent blog post from StarWars.com explained that Sidious had created a contingency plan in the event of his demise. This plane included years of experimenting with cloning to achieve immortality.

These cloning experiments produced Snoke, who drew Ben Solo to the dark side and was eventually killed by him in The Last Jedi. They also produced Rey’s father, Dathan, whom we will hopefully learn even more about when Shadow of the Sith releases.
