Kathleen Kennedy says Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 could happen
By Meg Dowell
Even though Obi-Wan Kenobi has only been over for a day, Star Wars fans are already begging for more. Nothing has been confirmed, but rumors are flying about a Season 2 thanks to a quote from a highly reliable source.
Lucasfilm president and Obi-Wan Kenobi executive producer Kathleen Kennedy previously told Entertainment Tonight that the series was always meant to be a stand-alone endeavor. Unless, of course, fans proved making more would be worth the investment.
“Well, frankly, we did set out to do that as a limited series. But I think if there’s huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration.”
There have been praises and complaints to both extremes from fans, so it’s unclear whether or not the show received the kind of reactions or numbers Kennedy is using for qualifiers in determining whether or not to make more episodes. But even if a Season 2 doesn’t happen, there are plenty of opportunities for Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff series. What about Roken’s future with The Path, or Reva’s story after the series finale?
Just because a show doesn’t get a second season doesn’t mean its characters can’t live on in their own shows. They could also easily appear in forthcoming shows like Andor or even Ahsoka.
Obi-Wan Kenobi ended with many of its loose ends tied in carefully crafted knots. It was written and produced as a limited series and very elegantly and concisely developed each of its characters, even legacy names like Vader and Obi-Wan who you’d think wouldn’t need it. We’ve all seen shows that started out great but dropped off in quality when they were stretched out for the sake of making more content. Perhaps this one is best left as-is, with other characters emerging from it to claim their turns in the spotlight.
All episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are now streaming on Disney+.
