Is it time to remake the original Star Wars trilogy?
By Matthew Roth
Perhaps the most sacred film trilogy of all time is the original trilogy of Star Wars. No matter what content Disney creates or Lucasfilm creates, most fans of the franchise agree this is a near-flawless trio of films. With that said I am here to ask the most sacrilegious question of all, is it time to remake the original trilogy?
Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm have done an excellent job filling in the gaps between episodes 3 and 4 with stories only we could have once dreamed about. With each film or show release, we as fans are left with excitement but, also questions as to why wasn’t X character in A New Hope or where were they the entire time? Is it time for Disney to reimagine George Lucas’s beloved trio of films?
Now I am not here to call for a shot-for-shot remake of all three films but rather to reimagine them with the new characters that have come into play. Characters like Roken, Hera, Zeb, and Cal, who all played key roles in building the rebellion only to never be heard from again. This could give us a chance to retell these stories while bringing them into the fold to bring about a more in depth showing of the fight for the galaxy.
One big question after Kenobi was why didn’t he help the rebellion more or train Leia? This could offer a chance to show him working behind the scenes until Luke was ready to be taken under his wing. Modern CGI and technology would also allow for the battles to be more intense throughout space and within the trenches of the Death Star. It would cause great division amongst the fanbase sure but, think of how much grander the story could become. Bringing in these characters in a way that means you don’t have to write them out for three films can carry more heart and weight.
Of course, they can still hit upon the big beats such as the reveal of Vader being Luke’s father, Obi-Wan becoming one with the force, and Luke saving Anakin Skywalker. Within that, you can showcase more espionage from these other characters or from the war itself. Disney can also have a way to show some of the hidden Jedi coming into play behind the scenes such as they have alluded to in their shows.
There is a way to preserve the original tale and what George Lucas built while also building upon that story and bringing in these new beloved characters. In fact, you could have actors such as Mark Hamill himself work closely onset while doing this. So I ask, is it time to remake the original Star Wars trilogy?
