It is safe to say that the the world has fallen in love with Grogu and Din Djarin from The Mandalorian. With Grogu and Din being such beloved characters, fans can’t help but worry about their fates.
Even though it is highly unlikely that either of them would be killed off any time soon, there is always a possibility that they could die by the end of the series. Some fans have even speculated that the series will end with Din’s death.
While fans will have to wait to see what happens, a recent Vanity Fair story about Jon Favreau’s reaction to Iron Man/Tony Stark being killed in Avengers: Endgame may offer insight into whether The Mandalorian would ever kill Din or Grogu.
According to Endgame co-director Joe Russo, Favreau had a strong reaction when he learned of Iron Man’s death:
"“I remember pacing on the corner of a stage on the phone with Favreau trying to talk him off a ledge. Because he’s like, ‘You can’t do this. It’s gonna devastate people, and you don’t want them, you know, walking out of the theater and into traffic.’”"
Favreau directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2, along with playing Tony’s Stark good friend Happy Hogan in many Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Favreau’s attachment to Iron Man and what he represents is understandable.
If he was adamantly against killing Iron Man, it is highly unlikely that Favreau will ever want to kill Din Djarin or Grogu. Favreau recognizes the importance of hope and inspiration that beloved characters like Iron Man, Din, and Grogu provide. He doesn’t want to take that away from audiences.
As The Mandalorian showrunner who helped create Din and Grogu in the first place, Favreau may even be more attached to them than he was to Iron Man. He helped create Iron Man for the MCU, but the character of Iron Man had already existed for decades in Marvel Comics. Meanwhile, Din and Grogu didn’t exist in any form until Favreau brought their stories to life.
Compared to 2 Iron Man movies, Favreau has also already spent more time telling the stories of Din and Grogu after seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian.
Given the story decisions made for Din and Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett, it seems like Favreau not only wants to keep these characters alive, but he never wants to keep them separated for too long. Even though Grogu went off with Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian‘s season 2 finale, Din and Grogu were reunited only a couple of episodes after their characters made their first appearances in The Book of Boba Fett, with the dynamic duo together again for season 3 of The Mandalorian.
What will happen with Din and Grogu in the future is all speculation for now, but Favreau’s resistance to Iron Man being killed and other storytelling decisions he’s already made seem to indicate that The Mandalorian will never kill Din or Grogu.
