Over the years, Star Wars has found its way to most corners of the world. Movies, TV, comics, books, and more. The tricky part is finding ways to keep Star Wars fresh within each of those categories. The same is true of the galaxy far, far away in games. We’ve been able to play out Star Wars scenarios of our own over the years thanks to video games, tabletop roleplaying games, and card games.

It’s that last one that draws attention—when one thinks of fantasy card games, Magic: The Gathering comes to mind. Trading and collectible card games exploded in the ‘90s, with MTG at the forefront. That doesn’t mean others didn’t get in on the action—Decipher made the beloved Star Wars Collectible Card Game from 1995 to 2001, before losing the license to Wizards of the Coast (makers of MTG). Wizards then produced the Star Wars Trading Card Game from 2002 to 2005. Both SWCCG and SWTCG have fans that play and create cards to this day.

Since 2011, Fantasy Flight Games has held the license to make Star Wars card, roleplaying, and miniature games. However, the Star Wars: The Card Game ceased creating expansions in 2018. While Fantasy Flight Games’ parent company has moved roleplaying and miniature games to different publishers they own, FFG will continue to publish card games.

Fantasy Flight Announces New Star Wars Deckbuilding Game

In 2023, Fantasy Flight Games will begin to publish Star Wars The Deckbuilding Game, designed by Caleb Grace. Grace is one of the lead designers on both Marvel Champions: The Card Game and The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. As you can see from the announcement above, not much is currently known about the game other than it’ll be a competitive PvP-style game. This differs from Fantasy Flight Games’ usual style of co-op games like Marvel Champions: The Card Game. If this new game follows past iterations of Star Wars card games, we can assume that the PVP will have players taking on the role of either the Light side or the Dark side. Regardless, it’ll be a few months before anything more definitive about the game is known.
