Marvel and Star Wars are perhaps the two most popular franchises right now, and with good reason. Many Star Wars fans are also Marvel fans, and many Marvel fans are also Star Wars fans. So it can be a bit bizarre when an actor from one franchise decides to come out against another.

But that’s exactly what Mark Ruffalo has done. In an interview with Metro to promote the upcoming She-Hulk TV show, the actor who plays the Incredible Hulk took a shot at Star Wars. When asked if there was too much Marvel content, this was his response:

“It’s not something I worry about. I understand that these things run their course and then something else comes along. But the thing Marvel has done well is that, inside the MCU, just as they do with comic books, they let a director or an actor sort of recreate each piece to their own style, their likeness.

“Marvel generally lets them bring that to the material. If you watch a Star Wars, you’re pretty much going to get the same version of Star Wars each time.

“It might have a little bit of humour. It might have a little bit of different animation. But you’re always, really, in that same kind of world. But with Marvel you can have a whole different feeling even within the Marvel Universe.”

Now, this is just Ruffalo’s opinion, and he’s fully entitled to it. Others may agree or disagree. But with so many people being fans of both franchises, it’s an odd comment to make.

Star Wars isn’t a rival to Marvel, since they are owned by the same company, and one that tries to ensure both franchises prosper. The timing isn’t ideal, as some audiences may choose to not watch She-Hulk because of these comments. Smart-Hulk is definitely not on display here.

She-Hulk will release on Disney+ August 18.
