Could George Lucas appear in The Mandalorian? Favreau and Filoni say maybe
By Meg Dowell
These days, Star Wars fans are obsessed with scoping out cameos in their favorite shows. A cameo from George Lucas has happened once before, but even though he’s no longer directly involved in the making of new Star Wars projects, two of the franchise’s major creatives say it could happen again — maybe. If they’re lucky.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni weren’t 100 percent certain about there ever being a Lucas cameo in The Mandalorian. But Favreau wholeheartedly expressed his admiration for the filmmaker and how much he and Filoni work well together.
“He’s been on the set when Dave’s been directing,” Favreau said. “I love watching Dave and George together. George, I have tremendous respect for. I’ve been very fortunate to have great conversations where I’ve learned a lot. But when I see Dave and George Lucas together, that’s like a whole [other thing].”
Lucas and Filoni worked together on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Lucas quickly became both a mentor and an inspiration for Filoni. The reason so many fans admire the mind behind shows like Star Wars: Rebels is because Lucas has taught him to truly and deeply understand Star Wars as a storyteller. He’s not the only one creating these stories, but he’s now in a role that allows him to pass on what he has learned to those working with him.
Filoni isn’t fully confident that a Lucas cameo will happen, but he hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility either.
“He’d have to be the son of Baron Papanoida or something like that,” Filoni said. Lucas played Papanoida in Revenge of the Sith. “I don’t know. I wouldn’t even speculate on that.”
As for what’s to come in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, more will likely be revealed in the months to come. The show is expected to return in February 2023.
