What Mon Mothma’s deleted Revenge of the Sith scene can tell us about Andor
By Meg Dowell
The upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor, while focusing largely on the journey of Rogue One’s Cassian Andor in the years leading up to the film, will also show audiences Mon Mothma’s subtle yet impactful role in forming a rebellion against the Galactic Empire.
While we know Mon Mothma will feature heavily in the upcoming series, and the trailers have shown important glimpses of the kind of role she’ll play in the story, there’s even more past content to draw from to get a better idea of what to expect from her character.
In “Seeds of Rebellion,” one of the deleted scenes cut from Revenge of the Sith, members of the senate conduct a private meeting in Padmé Amidala’s apartment to discuss the possibility of allying to form a quiet resistance against the Chancellor.
Mon Mothma is one of the key players in this scene, speaking to Padmé directly when the former queen expresses concern about the group’s plans.
“We are hoping to form an alliance in the senate to stop the Chancellor from further subverting the constitution — that’s all,” she says to her friend. The scene can be watched below, and is also available to stream in the movie’s extras tab on Disney+.
Mon Mothma’s character hasn’t been given much of a spotlight in canon on-screen as of yet — even in the Legends continuity, most of what we learned about her character was presented almost exclusively in the books. That’s all about to change now.
Even though Revenge of the Sith removed Genevieve O’Reilly’s role from the final cut, both the actor and the character are about to come back into the universe stronger than ever. Rebels gave us a small taste in its latter seasons; soon, we feast.
Star Wars: Andor will premiere its first three episodes on September 21 exclusively on Disney+.
