The future of Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars film Rogue Squadron is once again uncertain — that is, if you judge the fate of the project by its original release date alone.

Variety has reported that the project, which was originally scheduled for a December 2023 theatrical release, is no longer listed as part of Disney’s 2023 overall release schedule.

The project was first revealed in December 2020 as part of Disney Investor Day, in which a large handful of Star Wars projects were slated for release over the following five to 10 years. This announcement came with a teaser featuring Jenkins discussing how much piloting and Star Wars meant to her personally.

It’s been reported that scheduling conflicts are behind the uncertainty surrounding the film’s production and release date. Jenkins, supposedly working on the next installment in the Wonder Woman series of films, seems just as passionate about Rogue Squadron now as she’s been since its announcement. She’s even reportedly spoken with the author of the original X-Wing books in the process of developing the story.

While Rogue Squadron may not be happening as early as planned, this isn’t actually a surprise. At Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned it was possible that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film would now come before Jenkins’, ideally in 2023.

It’s not likely that this is still happening so soon, but it also doesn’t mean either or both movies are off the table for good. Release dates for films and shows change all the time; it’s a completely normal part of the ins and outs of producing a big-budget project.

Will we get another Star Wars movie in 2023 — even if it’s not Jenkins’ version of Top Gun in space? It’s likely that no one knows the answer to this question for sure … yet.
