The newest live-action Star Wars series, Andor, will mark one of the biggest release days in the history of the franchise. But that’s not the only thing it’s bound to accomplish with its three-episode premiere.

To put it simply, Andor, according to those who have been lucky enough to see it for themselves ahead of its public release date, doesn’t feel like Star Wars in the same way past live-action series have. It tells a story set in the Star Wars universe. But it’s more concerned with telling a powerful story than it is with telling a Star Wars story.

There is and always will be a place for “fan service” in mega-franchises like Star Wars. There’s nothing wrong with feeling excited when you recognize one of your favorite characters as they appear on-screen unexpectedly, or clapping as soon as the classic “I have a bad feeling about this” line makes its debut in a project.

Don’t expect too much of that from Andor, though, especially as the series progresses. At its heart, the series will be an important part of larger Star Wars storytelling, echoing the themes that span across its various forms of media. But it will also focus on telling a story about the things people have to do to start and win wars. It won’t always feel hopeful. It might feel intense, perhaps a little overwhelming at points.

But it’s Star Wars. New Star Wars! It’s about time.
