RUMOR: Has Thrawn been cast for Ahsoka?
By Jacob Boesch
“Where is Grand Admiral Thrawn?” Ahsoka’s words have hung with us since The Mandalorian Season 2. Rumors mills went abuzz with the prospect of seeing everyone’s favorite blue mastermind on screen, but do we finally have an idea on who might be playing him?
This would not be the first time that Twitter has been sure of a scoop like this. However, there certainly seems to be more momentum behind the rumors this time. Lars Mikkelsen, voice of the character in Rebels, is rumored to have been casted for the role in the upcoming Ahsoka show. He would not be the first in his family to play a role in live-action Star Wars, since his brother Mads Mikkelsen played Galen Erso in Rogue One.
At Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, we were treated to appearances by Rosario Dawson and Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Ahsoka and Sabine Wren respectively. Since then, it was also announced that Eman Esfandi would portray Ezra Bridger. Given the ending of Rebels, it was only a matter of time before the Grand Admiral made his appearance. We saw the mural from the end of Rebels on stage in Anaheim this year, and the Grand Admiral is a very big appreciator of art.
Grand Admiral Mitth’raw’nuruodo (Thrawn) is the creation of revered writer Timothy Zahn. The character first appeared in the Legends novel Heir to the Empire. Since then, he made the transition to canon via Rebels and the self-titled Thrawn novel, also by Timothy Zahn. In that time, Zahn has written 5 more novels centered around the character. He hails from the Chiss Ascendancy, outside the reaches of the Empire, and is known for being an impeccable military leader.
It remains to be seen if this rumor will pan out. Ahsoka will not air until 2023, but it began production back in May. However, this sort of official announcement will be sure to rock the fandom. If you are planning on attending Star Wars Celebration London next summer, you could be in for a big treat.
