The anthology series Tales of the Jedi brought us back into the Prequel Era and the Clone Wars. Focusing on the characters of Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku, we got to saw pieces of their lives throughout this time. But we also got a look at other characters as well, and one, in particular, was a nice cameo from Star Wars Rebels.

In the episode “Practice Makes Perfect,” Ahsoka is taking a lightsaber test in the midst of several masters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Tera Sinube. Anakin Skywalker hurries in late for his padawan’s test.

Then over in the corner, there are two other people watching. Fans of Star Wars Rebels and The Bad Batch probably recognized them. They are Jedi Master Depa Billaba and padawan Caleb Dume. But Rebels fans know Caleb by a different name which is Kanan Jarrus.

Watching little Kanan fanboying over Ahsoka’s test actually adds a lot to Star Wars Rebels. He was surprised and almost giddy the first time he reunites with her in Rebels. She becomes a teacher to him in that series in a lot of ways. But it’s clear she affected him while he was young as well.

Caleb and Depa also appeared in the opening minutes of The Bad Batch. In it, it’s the final moments of the Clone Wars. Depa and her clone troopers are facing off against battle droids. Before they’re overwhelmed, Caleb brings in reinforcements which is the Batch. As they claim victory, Order 66 begins and Depa is killed. Caleb flees as Hunter and Crosshair follow him. Hunter, not affected by Order 66, is just as confused as Caleb at what’s happening. He lets the boy get away, fueling Crosshair’s suspicions against his teammate.

Caleb would of course go on to change his name to Kanan Jarrus while in hiding. We see this play out in the Kanan: The Last Padawan comic series and more of him in hiding in the novel A New Dawn. As a fan of Rebels, it was a cool moment to catch a glimpse of him in Tales of the Jedi.
