There may be some exciting “cameo” appearances in the upcoming season of The Bad Batch, according to Jon Favreau. (He’s probably talking about guest appearances, but “cameo” seems to be the term everyone is misusing these days.)

Speaking to IGN, Favreau quickly dodged a question about “cameo” appearances in The Bad Batch Season 2 by explaining how the writers’ room typically decides which Star Wars characters get to show up in other Star Wars projects.

“Anytime we can bring in characters like that it’s so exciting in the writer’s room,” he said. “And as we design the characters, as we talk about all the different details to these stories together it’s really fun when we have those extra action figures  to play with.”

Based on the first trailer released for the new season of The Bad Batch, we already know of some Star Wars characters that will be finding their way into the Disney+ animated series. We see not only Palpatine, but also Commander Cody and Gungi — the former Jedi Padawan first introduced in The Clone Wars.

And these are only the returning characters we know about — usually when someone like Favreau refuses to answer questions like this, it’s because they’re deliberately keeping a secret. As they should, of course — some things have to be left to surprise the audience when the show airs, otherwise, what’s the point?

But the first season already proved almost anything is possible. A young Hera Syndulla was heavily featured in several episodes of Season 1, and Captain Rex appeared in an episode as well. The show even began with a surprise appearance from Caleb Dume (otherwide known as Kanan Jarrus).

The wait to find out who will return this season, thankfully, isn’t much longer.

Season 2 of The Bad Batch premieres January 4, 2023 exclusively on Disney+.
