Andor’s Diego Luna reflects on the meaning behind Skeen’s death
By Meg Dowell
The first season of Andor surprised viewers by allowing many characters expected not to survive the finale to live another day — but the show still took many beloved (and hated) characters from us. Including Skeen.
At the end of the heist that brought Cassian Andor and Skeen together to work on the same team, the latter made an unexpected proposal: Take the money and run; leave everyone else behind.
Rather than agree to the tempting offer, Andor kills Skeen with a single shot — and actor Diego Luna was impressed with his character’s ability to move forward beyond that kill.
“He’s someone capable of forgiving himself, which is something that makes people different,” the actor told Collider. “We all make mistakes, but if you give yourself a second chance, that says that you are someone special. This guy is like that. He’s not going to then go talk to someone, say like, “Look, Skeen was trying to do this.” He makes the choice himself in a second, and he moves on. The conversation with himself is open. He’s honest to himself. I like that about this man.”
For a while, Skeen was a relatable character viewers almost felt sorry for. But his tragic story of losing his brother to the Empire, rallying him to the cause, was all a lie.
But Andor had no choice but to do what he could to prevent Skeen from taking all the money while also taking what he could for himself. That’s what you do in war — whatever it takes to survive.
While we obviously won’t be seeing Skeen again in this series, there’s plenty in store for Andor Season 2, set to premiere on Disney+ in 2024. The first season ended on a cliffhanger with Andor and Luthen prepared to shoot each other — only one of them, presumably, is going to fly that ship off into space.
And that’s just one of many storylines that await viewers until the new season arrives.
All episodes of Andor Season 1 are now available to stream exclusively on Disney+.
