Star Wars is such a long-running movie franchise that is loved by so many across the globe. The pit of Star Wars content is never-ending and I cannot wait for all that is to come within these next few years, let alone all of 2023 as well. There is one character within the franchise, that the head honcho, George Lucas, absolutely hates: Jabba the Hutt.

Although he is a Star Wars legend, that doesn’t mean that he is a well-liked legend, now does it?

Why does George Lucas HATE Jabba the Hutt? Let’s find out why together!

There is one main reason that initially started Lucas’ hatred for Jabba’s character. Originally, when he appeared in the first franchise film ever, A New Hope, Jabba the Hutt was originally supposed to be a human wearing a large fur coat and acting like your typical gangster, played by Declan Mulholland. Well, George Lucas hated that scene and was so unhappy with how it turned out that he completely scrapped it all together. In 1997, a special edition of A New Hope came out and featured a CGI’d Jabba instead of Mulholland.

However, even the rereleased scene was tossed back and forth and to this day, Lucas still debates taking it out all together and scrapping this whole idea of a human Hutt.

Yet another reason why Lucas hated Hutt was that his character’s pupped was a bit of an inconvenience on set. In the much-loved and debated on film, Return of the Jedi, we see Jabba with all of his crew in his little underground speakeasy. During the film, the weight of the Hutt puppet alone required several people to operate it. It also had quite the steep price tag of over half a million dollars (no puppet, save money…no puppet, no Jabba, no disgusting character fun).

George Lucas basically confirmed that had CGI been available at the time of the 1983 original release date year, he would’ve used that instead of the super-hated Jabba puppet.

While Lucas hated Jabba the Hutt primarily for his on-set inconveniences, he is quite the Star Wars legend within the whole entire franchise. It super cool to see that work of art in the movies. Yes, he’s disgusting, yes he drools all over and keeps hot lady slaves. However, knowing that it’s simply a puppet is absolutely mind-blowing and mind-bending. Jabba was a true gangster and without his tried and true gangster ways, the original trilogy and all the other films to follow just simply wouldn’t be the same without him!
