Crafted by the first Mandalorian Jedi Tarre Vizsla, the darksaber is unlike any other weapon in Star Wars both in look, sound, and design. Its hilt is made of beskar, and its blade glows black and is shaped like a more traditional sword.

Though it’s similar to a traditional lightsaber, it was built with the Mandalorian wielder in mind. It was designed to align with both Jedi and Mandalorian combat styles, since Vizsla was the first and — as far as we know — only Mandalorian to ever join the Jedi Order.

The darksaber does have a kyber crystal just like all other lightsabers do! The crystal is the heart of the saber, giving it not just its color but its energy as well. Kyber crystals are unique, and for the Jedi, the crystal chooses its owner.

The darksaber, being a one-of-a-kind artifact, has belonged to many Mandalorians (and one Jedi) over the course of its life. Though not much is known about the specific crystal that powers it, the darksaber and its crystal are highly responsive to the emotional state of the wielder. It also attempts to connect with whoever holds it.

The more the wielder connects with the darksaber and the crystal inside it, the easier the weapon becomes to handle.

There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the darksaber, especially when it comes to how it changed hands between the rise of the Empire and its eventual fall. At the end of Star Wars: Rebels, Bo-Katan proudly accepted it from Sabine Wren. But by the time we get to The Mandalorian, she’s long since lost the saber and all it represents to Gideon.

Din Djarin is the rightful owner now, but he has a lot to learn still about what that truly means for his future.

Next. It’s time to show us the darksaber heist. dark
