Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season two, episode seven, “The Clone Conspiracy.”

Season two of The Bad Batch has reached its halfway point with a two-episode arc that answers multiple questions about not just Clone Troop 99, but the entire clone narrative in the larger Star Wars canon. Without further ado, let’s dive into the shocking ending of “The Clone Conspiracy.”

True Believer

In an episode that featured none of the Bad Batch, “The Clone Conspiracy” instead took a wide lens on the galaxy and answered a huge question for Star Wars fans–why the clone stormtroopers were phased out in favor of humans.

The episode followed Senator Chuchi (Jennifer Hale) who, alongside Bale Organa (Phil LaMarr) was a lone advocate for the clones as the Senate voted to decommission them in favor of younger human soldiers.

In her effort to provide a pension and retirement for the troopers who had once protected the galaxy, Chuchi uncovered a more insidious plot about the truth of Kamino, leading her to cross paths with Captain Rex, who seemed to be working as a rebel spy.

In the episode’s final moments, Rex had captured a clone assassin to interrogate, only for him to kill himself, telling Rex he was a true believer. The episode is a stark shift from most of the episodes of The Bad Batch so far, recalling the latter, darker plots of The Clone Wars.

However, because of the timeline, The Bad Batch is in a unique position to explore the rise of the Empire and flesh out the canon in refreshing ways. What remains unclear is whether “The Clone Conspiracy” will propel the Bad Batch forward or if this is another subplot in their larger story.
