Cal Kestis and his found family are back in a brand-new excerpt for the upcoming novel Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars.

The novel, written by Sam Maggs and set to release next month, is an action-adventure story set between the events of the video games Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. The latter game is set to release in late April 2023.

Years after the events of Fallen Order, Cal and the rest of the Mantis crew find themselves face-to-face with a rogue stormtrooper — a member of the Empire who wants to use her position to do something good.

But is it really wise to trust an Imperial — no matter how much they might do to convince you they’re on your side? Maybe. Maybe not.

In an excerpt released last week, Cere and Cal find themselves locked in a dangerous duel with none other than the Fifth Brother — a potentially deadly Inquisitor who isn’t going to go down without a fight.

"“[Cere] knew what Cal would see, from where he was getting back on his feet. He would see the Inquisitor slow like he was hitting a wall of water, his feet betraying his own orders to continue their forward motion. He would see the red lightsaber and its circular threat halt, frozen mid-spin, returning to its less dangerous form. He would watch the Inquisitor sweat as he tried to push back through the Force, to regain control over himself and over his lightsaber, and he would see the dawning fear on the Inquisitor’s face as he realized he was outmatched.”"

The Fifth Brother was first introduced in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, but has since appeared in comics such as Darth Vader (2017) and the 2022 Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. He’s the major villain of Maggs’ story, and is just as sinister as his fellow Inquisitors.

Battle Scars features many familiar characters to those who know the story of Fallen Order. But it introduces new characters to the Star Wars universe as well, and does a perfect job of catching the reader up on things they may have missed from the original game.
