Pedro Pascal is busy promoting The Mandalorian Season 3 these days. He talked about the upcoming season with GamesRadar and discussed in what ways the bond between Din and Grogu has grown in Season 3. Grogu reunited with Din during The Book Of Boba Fett, and now with some time having passed since that reunion, the pair are back together and returning to their old, adorable ways.
While discussing the initial connection between the characters, Pedro said “There’s an instant relatability and disarming charm to the relationship as soon as they’re matched up together”, and he continued by describing the potential for more between them, perhaps a father son relationship unlike any seen before.
"“And yet, at the same time, there’s so much more to explore in terms of protector and protected, and who learns from who depending on what the circumstance is, who depends on who depending on what the circumstance is, and how that dynamic can shift between the two is really beautiful.”"
Although Din lived out most of his time in Season 1 and 2 trying to locate the right people who’d be able to guide him to a Jedi that could train Grogu, Din will ultimately have to accept that the little one did all the training he wanted to with Luke and then decided it was enough, and made the choice to return on his own.
Now it will be interesting to see how and when they learn to depend on each other. Grogu obviously has stronger force abilities now after his training with Luke Skywalker, so he can protect his father as much as possible, and the two can even learn from each other.
"“There’s something about surrendering to your true self, in a way, in spite of so much of that self being buried under armor and lost to himself beyond his duties in life, or what his understanding is to function, and then the human heart being emerged by his relationship to this child”"
Pascal explained that this relationship helps Din discover his own heart and learn to be true to himself. Thanks to Grogu, the man underneath the armor has slowly emerged, and it’s his time to fully take over and figure out that identity. The show began as one about “The Mandalorian”, the “Bounty Hunter”, but now, it’s going to be about the man underneath the armor, Din Djarin, and Grogu, the most meaningful connection he’s ever made in his life, the connection that went deep into his heart, despite the impenetrable armor that covers him from head to toe.
The wait is finally over. The Mandalorian Season 3 premieres tomorrow on Disney+.
