The Mandalorian Season 3 reveals Cara Dune’s fate
During the first two seasons of The Mandalorian Cara Dune as played by Gina Carano was one of Din Djarin’s closest allies. After Gina Carano’s dismissal from the role and cancellation of the planned Rangers of the New Republic, there have been quite a few questions about her fate. While it seems obvious that Gina Carano will not be making her return, the character needed a solid end in the Star Wars universe, and the first episode of The Mandalorian season 3 reveals where that is.
When we first see Neverro again it is easy to tell that it has had a massive boom in prosperity, but the usual thievery and piracy that happens in the outer rim hasn’t just vanished. Nor has Greef Karga’s history with the bounty hunter’s guild, even if he has droids to carry his cape for him now. Last we saw, Cara Dune was with Karga on Neverro but he reveals that she has been recruited by special forces again after she and Luke Skywalker gave him over to a New Republic War Trubinual.
In a way, this is her returning to her roots working with the Republic. That is logically where her allegiances go, even if she had made a decent contribution to the Outer Rim. While Greef Karga says he wants to remain independent of the New Republic it seems questionable if that will be possible. This is especially true as a “Pirate King” (who wasn’t Honda Onakka) shows us to pressure Neverro.
As for the future of the Cara Dune, this ending gives the character space to continue in other mediums such as novels or comics. In theory, should Gina Carano ever make amends with Disney, Dune could still reappear but it seems much more likely that the character will continue her progression in other mediums for now.
