Emily Swallow explains “promise” of “remarkable” Din Djarin
Emily Swallow (The Armorer) gave an in depth interview to The Nerdist about her role in The Mandalorian. The questions cover many areas of the show, including the season premiere, the use of stunt doubles, Mandalorian lore and how the information given to her by the makers enhances her performance. The actress gives incredibly thought provoking answers and the entire interview is an absolute must read for fans.
Swallow explains that the relic Din brings The Armorer in the season premiere gave her hope. She was asked to explain the “hope” again in more detail, to which she explained that there’s a lot she herself doesn’t know about the Armorer and that she’s mysterious. However, the most interesting part of the interview came right after this where she explained what The Armorer sees in Din Djarin.
"She’s not like a mystic who sees the future in specifics. But I do think she has a sixth sense. She has a feeling about things. And so, for instance, I think with Din Djarin, from the beginning, she has seen promise in him. I don’t think she knows for certain, like she hasn’t seen a prophecy he’s going to lead them to the Promised Land or anything like that. But I think she just knows he is somebody remarkable who is going to play an important part for the Mandalorian people."
Emily Swallow also explained that Din Djarin has changed her and challenged her since the start of Season 1. She called him “stubborn” for wanting to go through the challenge of trying to redeem himself and said that he will learn from whatever difficulties he faces.
It’s interesting to hear from the actor’s point of view of how highly The Armorer thinks of Din Djarin. She knows there’s something special about him and she’s always known. Even in the season premiere, Din shows how stubborn he is when he gets her to agree to forgive him if he can bring proof that he bathed in the living waters underneath the mines of Mandalore. The mystery of the Armorer is as much about what she says and what she choose not to say.
She has never told Din Djarin that she sees anything remarkable in him, but it is a vibe she has given off subtly. That could be why she said the Darksaber is “more suitable for your station”. She also said that Din has changed her since Season 1. Will this change be enough to make her see that removing your helmet doesn’t make you any less of a Mandalorian? Is the Armorer’s faith in Din that he will play an important role for Mandalorians going to pay off?
The answers to these questions will probably be revealed throughout the course of Season 3. In the meantime, you can check out the entire interview here.
