The article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3 episode 2.
From the first shot of a giant eye peering at a helpless Bo-Katan and Din at the bottom of the living waters on Mandalore, it is clear that a major discovery has just been made. A fabled beast, long thought to be extinct, has just made its presence known. The consequences of this encounter could change Mandalore forever.
As Bo-Katan explains, the Mythosaur is famed among the Mandalorians because their greatest leader once tamed the creatures, leading to its adoption as a symbol of Mandalore. The question that is bound to cross their minds now is whether the Mythosaur can be tamed again. Could this creature be the key that will bring the Mandalorian people back together again?
Bo-Katan, who has been searching for a way to reunite her people on their former home, may be tempted to try taming the Mythosaur. However, it could be their smallest companion, Grogu, who will be the one to accomplish this seemingly impossible task.
To understand how, we must first consider a moment from the first episode of season 3. As Grogu gazed out the window of their ship while in hyperspace, he spied the outline of a group of purrgils, a species of space whales first seen in the animated show Star Wars: Rebels. In Rebels, Ezra Bridger, the Force-sensitive hero of the show, forms a strong connection to animals using The Force. In the show’s finale, Ezra uses his link to call the purrgils to his aid and help him defeat his enemies.
The reappearance of the purrgils in The Mandalorian could create a parallel between Grogu and Ezra. Grogu sensed the purrgils before seeing them, turning to watch their shadowed forms flying beside him. This quick moment could be a hint that Grogu shares a similar connection to animals as Ezra.
If he can sense the purrgils, he may be able to form a similar bond to the Mythosaur. As Grogu’s continues to practice his abilities, he will undoubtedly discover new ways The Force works. Communicating with and taming the Mythosaur may very well be a part of that journey.
