Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season two, episode thirteen, “Pabu.”
After last week’s chilling and devastating episode that saw Crosshair fall captive to the hands of Imperial scientists, The Bad Batch returned to its normal format with the rest of the crew taking refuge on a remote island. Read on to find out what happened in “Pabu.”
Making New Friends
“Pabu” began as what seemed like a routine mission-of-the-week episode with the remaining members of the Bad Batch helping Phee (Wanda Sykes) recover an artifact before they received a threatening message from Cid (Rhea Perlman) that loomed exposure of not just them, but Omega (Michelle Ang).
Phee led the clones to a remote island and safe haven for refugees called Pabu where Omega soon made her first non-clone friend in a long time. While Phee seemed to be very strongly suggesting the crew stay and put down roots in a safe place, Hunter seemed skeptical they were out of danger.
He was ultimately right, but the danger came from natural forces rather than the Empire in a random sea surge. After helping the locals, the episode ended with the clones ultimately deciding to stay a bit longer.
The story choice was a bit odd immediately following “The Outpost.” We know Crosshair is in imminent danger and that the existential plot of the season has to do with the clone conspiracy. It’s inevitable the Bad Batch will be dragged into the conflict one way or another, no matter how much they try to resist their calling.
With only three episodes left, keeping Clone Troop 99 away from the central plot of the season ultimately undermines the larger structure of the series–until we see how the remaining episodes play out.
