A tweet from the Peter Mayhew Foundation has stated that Mary Angelique Mayhew, the wife of the late Star Wars actor, most well-known for his portrayal of Chewbacca, has died.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Angie Mayhew.  After complications from a double heart valve replacement surgery, she has joined her beloved, Peter Mayhew, in the stars.  Her kindness, love and generosity will always be remembered,” the tweet, as seen below, states.

Peter Mayhew passed away in 2019 at the age of 74. He portrayed Chewbacca in all three original trilogy films as well as in Revenge of the Sith and shared the role with Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo in 2015’s The Force Awakens before finally retiring and serving as a Wookiee consultant for The Last  Jedi, with Suotamo taking over the role completely from this point onward.

Peter and Angie Mayhew were married in Texas, Angie’s home state, in 1999. She is survived by her three daughters Katy, Sheryl, and Kathleen.

The couple were responsible for establishing the Peter Mayhew Foundation, which Angie would continue to be heavily involved with after Peter’s passing. The organization, named after the late actor, makes donations to those in need and is supported by a variety of other charitable organisations such as the 501st Legion, Wounded Warriors, the Make-a-Wish foundation among other non-profits.

Angie was well known in the Star Wars community and would often attend fan events. She continued to maintain a strong presence on social media and naturally received an outpouring of condolences upon news of her passing.

Our thoughts are with the Mayhew’s in this difficult time and we kindly ask that members of the Star Wars community continue to respect the family’s privacy.
