Chapter 22 of The Mandalorian Season 3 wrapped up the Darksaber plotline pretty quickly. The ending of the episode was surprising, to say the least, and perhaps somewhat anticlimactic for a few fans. While the lack of a duel between Din Djarin and Bo Katan Kryze might be considered underwhelming, the fact is that now the Darksaber again belongs to Bo Katan.

One has to wonder what’s next for Din? Is living on Nervarro and serving as a lawman under Greef Karga on the cards? The idea was suggested in the first episode of this season. Sure,  he can continue to help his Mandalorian friends including Bo Katan take back their planet, but a major part of the appeal of the series is how Din and Grogu can carry an entire episode by themselves. The “lone bounty hunter” became a lone bounty hunter and single father, and by the end of the season 2, he became the owner of the Darksaber, and potential ruler of Mandalore. Now that he’s just a dad and a Mandalorian, his purpose seems a little unclear. Bo Katan now has the Darksaber and a clear mission to bring her people together again.

However, Din continuing to tag along with Bo Katan, while dropping his child off at a babysitter seems a little unfair to both Din and Bo, not to mention that it robs the fans of sweet moments between father and child. Bo deserves to have her own limelight as she finally steps into the leadership position she has earned after years of seeing the suffering of those close to her and her people as a whole. Din on the other hand has a very important role to play as a father, and their journey of growth together seems to have stagnated at the moment.

With Grogu back from Luke, and Din back to being just a Dad who never takes his helmet off, the writers need to give Din some sort of character progression again. His own story has barely moved an inch this season. After being redeemed at the start of the season, something that may have seemed like a quest that would take much longer, nothing has really happened for him. Perhaps he needs to reload by going back to life as a bounty hunter. If not that, then he can take up Greef Karga’s offer and work as a lawman. In between he can go on quests to help his friends like Bo, Boba, Fennec, Greef Karga and Carson Teva. It’s also possible that he can live on Nevarro and oversee Grogu’s training as a foundling. Grogu can even attend the school there.

Now that Mandalore’s future looks bright, it’s time for the writers to focus on what’s next for Din and Grogu.
