Is Jedi: Survivor the Empire Strikes Back of its own trilogy?
By Meg Dowell
Now that there are two games in the “Jedi” series of Respawn Star Wars video games — Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor — is there a third on the way to complete a classic Star Wars trilogy? The game itself all but confirms it. Sort of.
As to whether or not there will be another sequel, it depends on the success of Survivor. If game director Stig Asmussen has their way, a sequel to complete the trilogy is almost a given. But even without that reassurance, if you’ve made it to the end of the game, you probably have that eerie feeling there’s more to come.
It’s the second installment of a story … much like a Star Wars movie whose sequel was much sadder than the first.
Like The Empire Strikes Back, the ending of Survivor is drenched in sorrow. There has been a lot of loss and death by this point, even with the little bit of hope that remains. It’s nowhere near as lighthearted as the ending of its predecessor. It leaves the audience wanting more. In many ways, it promises just that.
When both A New Hope and Jedi: Fallen Order were first made, there were no guarantees or promises of more. Their stories were deliberately self-contained. Granted, the former was the first in the franchise and had no other stories to pull from, which isn’t the case for the latter. But Fallen Order ended on a hopeful note because that was the endpoint the story sought to reach.
Now that the game has released its sequel, it makes sense that the story could afford to take a more sinister turn. It doesn’t have to end with everyone surviving (despite its name) because the middle act of a story is so often, and purposefully, painful.
We don’t yet know where Cal and crew will end up, but hopefully the curiosity alone will be enough to manifest the final piece.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is available now to play on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
