Way back in 2020, it was revealed that Taika Waititi would be developing a Star Wars movie. Every update we’ve gotten since then has boiled down to “he’s still working on it,” and at this point, it may be best to just let him chip away at the script as he sees fit.

The director, actor and writer recently told The Hollywood Reporter that his movie was still in the writing phase, as it seems to have been for quite some time.

He said: “I’ve got a really good idea for it …It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part.”

Waititi has led a highly fulfilling career, and first dove into the Star Wars universe through wearing multiple hats on the set of The Mandalorian. Those outside the inner circles of Hollywood actually don’t know how long it actually takes for movies to get made, even for a Star Wars and MCU director. This could be totally normal. We’re only hearing about it because we keep asking him about it.

It’s also likely largely out of his control — assuming Lucasfilm keeps as close of an eye on developing projects as they’re rumored to these days. Regardless of your feelings about the sequel trilogy films, one thing is true: There could have been more time taken to develop the overarching story to its fullest potential, and no Star Wars project will likely ever fail to take advantage of that opportunity again.

Let the man take as long as he wants to write a Star War. Everyone keeps saying they want “good Star Wars” — maybe this is only achieved when it isn’t rushed. Perhaps if he takes his time to let the story unfold at its own pace, it will turn out to be one of the greatest Star Wars films ever made.

You never know.
