June is Pride Month, commemorating the Stonewall Riots of 1969, which are considered one of the major catalysts for kicking off the gay rights movement not just in the United States but around the world as well. While Pride is a celebration, it’s also a protest.
Queer representation is more important than ever before. Pride started as a riot at Stonewall Inn when the accounts, which became legend, say our Black and Brown trans siblings picked up the first bricks to say no more to police brutality. It was our gay and lesbian siblings who were angry at being frisked and groped by officers to prove their sex. It was our queer ancestors who didn’t have phrases like non-binary, agender, and the understanding of gender we have now that held the line to protect each other and fight back against what they knew were wrong.
One of the patrons at Stonewall, Michael Fader, said, “We all had a collective feeling like we'd had enough of this kind of [expletive]. It wasn't anything tangible anybody said to anyone else, it was just kind of like everything over the years had come to a head on that one particular night in the one particular place and it was not an organized demonstration...”
The patrons of Stonewall formed kick lines, singing songs at the club-carrying police officers. One patron said, "I just can't ever get that one sight out of my mind. The cops with the nightsticks and the kick line on the other side. It was the most amazing thing ... And all the sudden that kick line, which I guess was a spoof on the machismo ... I think that's when I felt rage. Because people were getting smashed with bats. And for what? A kick line.”
The people at Stonewall fought back. They were tired of being swept up by police for just existing. They were tired of being physically violated by those in power. They were tired of not having the right simply to be. Whether it was the color of their skin, their queerness, or both being targeted, they were not taking it anymore.
Another anonymous patron recalled that, “The cops were totally humiliated. This never, ever happened. They were angrier than I guess they had ever been because everybody else had rioted ... but the fairies were not supposed to riot…”
And doesn’t that still sound like today? In a time when Black and Brown people are kidnapped unlawfully off our streets. In a time when trans rights are constantly under fire. In a time when our own government is taking away life-saving resources from those in most critical need of them.
We need diverse voices. While we discuss Star Wars and have fun, the voices on this list are more important than ever before. Each show and each person below is that kick line that says no more, we’re not taking this anymore. We exist. We are here. Queer people have always been in Star Wars.
Queer people have existed since the beginning of time, and we are not going anywhere.
