The Mandalorian is getting a Blu-ray release
The Mandalorian is getting a physical release, which is a huge win in the shifting tides of the Streaming Wars and actor strikes. Along with WandaVision and Loki, The Mandalorian will be released on Blu-ray and 4K UHD for fans to own. The two seasons will be available on December 12, just in time for the holidays.
As reported by Variety, these are the first physical releases from Disney+. It will be the first two seasons of the show and “will come with both a Collector’s Edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray disc, encased in luxe Steelbook packaging with collectible concept art cards and brand new box art designed by artist Attila Szzarka.”
While there aren’t details about the special features of The Mandalorian, Variety showcases Loki’s features. These include behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, gag reel, and more. Loki also includes the Marvel Studios: Assembled documentary. It’s probably safe to assume that The Mandalorian will have something along these lines, too, possibly with the Disney Gallery series as part of the special features. Though, this is just speculation at this point.
This is a massive win for fans. In a time when streaming services can snap their fingers and erase years worth of content, there has been more of a push to preserve streaming media through physical means, even through bootlegging. The promise of entire libraries of content was a lie from companies, as we’ve seen during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA that the services are more than willing to erase series instead of paying their employees fair wages. This has been a problem for animation for years, and history is repeating itself again.
Loki will be released on September 26, and WandaVision releases on November 28. These series and The Mandalorian‘s first two seasons will be available to pre-order on August 28.
