Episodes of the long-awaited Disney+ live-action Star Wars series Ahsoka are finally premiering today, ending a years-long bout of anticipation for a series that was first formally announced back in December 2020 during Disney Investor Day.
When the series was first announced nearly three years ago, very little was known about the expected plot — and honestly, even on the day of its release, we still don’t fully know what we’re in for. The show is starring two beloved Star Wars characters who both made their debut in animated shows. And though this is not Ahsoka Tano’s first live-action appearance, she will serve as the first nonhuman lead in a Star Wars live-action TV show. Din Djarin, Boba Fett, and Cassian Andor, though lovely, are quite simply human.
So even before its premiere, Ahsoka is already a groundbreaking Disney+ series, at least in terms of live-action Star Wars. Though we know many of the expected character appearances — Hera, Chopper, Grand Admiral Thrawn — there’s so much we don’t know.
And isn’t that really the best way to walk into a new Star Wars show — thinking you know everything that’s going to happen, but quickly realizing you’re going to get something completely different — and that’s a good thing?
It all begins tonight. And it’s only, realistically, just the beginning.
