Different types of Lightsabers in Star Wars, explained

At Savi's Workshop - Handbuilt Lightsabers in Star Wars: GalaxyÕs Edge, guests will be able to build their own lightsaber, guided by ancient wisdom but crafted by the choices they make on their own adventure. Each build will begin with a personal connection to a kyber crystal used to ignite the custom lightsaber. Moving on from Hilts, here’s more about the different Blades in Lightsabers!

Here are all of the different types of Blades that we know about thus far:

Singlebladed

This was the most common type of saber blade to be used all throughout Star Wars canon and obviously, it only came with one singular blade. Some notable people to have used this specific type of lightsaber included Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader, Mace Windu, and Cad Bane (just to name a few).

Dual-Phase

This particular type of lightsaber blade is actually super rare. Due to its dual-phased blade being able to be activated in an instant, it’s great for surprise attacks on in order to catch your enemy or opponent off-guard just a bit. It uses a combination of different focusing crystals in order to create such a blade that can extend up to double it’s original length with just one simple activation step. Other typical lightsabers have a manual adjuster for reducing the blade emission, but like we stated earlier, dual-phases can be triggered in a literal instant. You can also blade-width adjust these, should you need to or choose to doso. Someone notable that used this specific type of lightsaber included Count Dooku (Tyrannus).

Great Lightsaber/Light Club

This is a weapon that is the most similar to an actual lightsaber. Special focusing crystals, as well as power systems, allow this super rare lightsaber to project a blade that can reach (almost) roughly 3 meters in length. These sabers are super large and are typically wielded by larger individuals (users). Someone notable who used this specific type of lightsaber included Gorc, who was essentially a mutated Gamorrean Dark Jedi.

Short Lightsaber

This particular type of saber is exactly what it says that it is. It is a much shorter blade than your average lightsaber and is typically used (in a much easier way, that is) by those of shorter or smaller statures. Someone notable who used this specific type of lightsaber is someone that we all know, love, and aspire to be as wisdom-filled as; none other than Master Yoda himself used one of these.

Training Lightsaber

This is used only in terms of practicing lightsaber types of combat. While it’s non-lethal, it can still cause minor burns or bruising, should you come in contact with one. Some notable people that used this specific type of lightsaber included all of the Jedi Youngling that you see throughout various canon moments in the whole entire Star Wars universe.

Underwater Lightsaber

Most typical lightsabers were built to essentially short out whenever it came in contact with water. These, on the other hand, are crafted to operate underwater due to two crystals “employing a bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse”. Someone notable who had both a lightsaber and shoto that were able to function underwater included Ahsoka Tano.

Firesaber

These weren’t super effective sabers and actually tended up inflict just as much damage upon the user as it did the targets alike. These particular types of crystals that are used are actually misaligned, but this happens with just enough power “to keep the solid core of the saber…also cause the energy around it to flare out”. It’s not really known to be as effective of a cutting tool as your regular lightsabers are. They also tend to ‘spit’ when struck, which will in turn cause different lightsaber energy to spill out and burn whatever seems or just so happens to be near by it. Firesabers are typically pretty unstable and have been known to have its blade just plane ole die mid-combat; they’ve also been known to blow up in their user’s hands. Some notable people who used this specific type of lightsaber included Darth Maleval and Sivter.

Dark Saber

This ancient, black-bladed lightsaber was first created by Tarre Vizsla, who just so happened to be the very first Mandalorian inducted into the Jedi Order. It was shorter than all other traditional sabers and was also shaped more like your traditional sword. Upon igniting, the sound the came from it is actually much more high-pitched than all other variants out there. The Dark Saber’s crystal also seemed to be served as a conduit for Force energy. Some notable people who have held the one and only Dark Saber included Darth Maul, Din Djarin, Moff Gideon, and Bo-Katan Kryze, just to name a few (see others right over here).

Shoto

This particular type of lightsaber has a much shorter blade than most and has great use as an assault knife. Because of it’s super small blade, it’s actually super easy for those are not all that Force-sensitive, to use it. It’s sole purpose is to work in conjunction with another lightsaber, which brings us to this fact: in order to use it super skillfully with her other one, here is someone notable who used a Shoto and is very very good at doing so, for that matter: Ahsoka Tano.
