Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is still happening, says the director himself

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is still happening, according to a recent interview with the writer and director. When we might see the movie hit theaters, however, is still up in the air.

The untitled project, much of which remains a mystery, was originally announced at Disney Investor Day 2020 along with a handful of other projects. In the nearly three years since the slate of announcements, some have come to fruition, others have fizzled out, and many more — including this movie — still seem to be in the early stages of development.

“At the moment, I’m still developing something with them [Lucasfilm],” the director told Entertainment Tonight Online. “My thing is I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don’t want to rush this movie.”

This latest quote from Waititi says about the same thing he’s communicated before when asked to give an update on his project with Lucasfilm. However, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also offered an update this time, confirming that “it’s all underway. Taika’s a little slow. Everybody’s busy, but yeah. Those are great projects and we’re definitely still doing them.”

In other words, Lucasfilm is confident enough in Waititi’s ability to make a good movie that the company is willing to work with his schedule and allow him to take his time making the movie he wants to make.

At this point, we’re probably not going to get another update like this for a while. Especially since the strikes are just now ending and everyone’s going to be shuffling projects and people around, which they largely haven’t been able to do for months.

I’m not sure why fans seem to be in such a rush to get more Star Wars movies. There’s plenty of other Star Wars happening, and it’s been happening just fine since 2019 when the last movie hit theaters (the movie everyone complained about for some reason, mind you). But people aren’t going to stop asking, so Waititi is going to have to keep giving non-answers while he tries to work on all his things. If that’s what fans want, it’s apparently what they’re going to keep getting.

It’s unclear when Star Wars fans will see another movie set in a galaxy far, far away. While some sources claim the next Star Wars film will drop in 2025, there is no guarantee this won’t change as it has before.
