Taika Waititi wouldn’t mind if people didn’t like his Star Wars movie

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie might not be the film some Star Wars fans want to see — but that’s the least of his concerns.

When the director was asked what Star Wars fans might be able to expect from the forthcoming film in the franchise, he could only really say one thing.

“It will be … dramatic pause… a Taika Waititi film… It’s gonna piss people off.”

According to Waititi, the film is still in the early stages of development, so there’s a reason we haven’t heard many details about it in the three years since its 2020 Disney Investor Day announcement.

From what the director has said regarding the project, however, it’s clear he has one goal in mind: To make whatever Star Wars movie he wants to make, whether fans like it or not. Since many Star Wars fans aren’t filmmakers and don’t really know what they want to see other people make, this is probably the best strategy Waititi could implement here.

What the franchise really needs, after all, is an original film from a successful creator who isn’t setting out to please a fanbase. Really, he just wants to entertain himself, and some of the best movies come out of that mindset. If a creator isn’t having fun, the audience won’t either — and it shows.

Chances are, we won’t hear much more about this project until later in 2024 at the absolute earliest. And maybe that’s for the best. Star Wars has promised us an entire slate of TV shows that haven’t been moving forward in months, so this next year might look a little different in terms of what’s available to stream that’s new.

Might I suggest trying out some Star Wars books while you wait? They’re pretty great.
