Star Wars Celebration might be an onslaught of news from all of the upcoming shows and movies. However, during the Live! Stage livestream on Star Wars' YouTube channel, Anthony Daniels shared a delightful story about filming Ahsoka Season 1.
Sitting down with host Anthony Carboni (who literally wrapped up Daniels in bubble wrap at the end of the interview to keep him safe until the Star Wars' 50th anniversary), Daniels discussed reprising his role as C-3PO in Ahsoka's first season. However, he was tricked by some "magic," as he called it.

"I was thrilled to be invited to do one scene in Ahsoka," Daniels began. "I brought a message from the council and General Leia Organa to this huge kind of courtroom thing. It was amazing. It was in Southern California, and I had arrived from Canada. I was so jet lagged. I dressed up in the suit backstage and went into this huge kind of courtroom."
"It was this big, round courtroom," Daniels continued. "Being in California, the sky-- it was open to the sky. It was beautiful. All the scenery, like a real courtroom. Furniture, and so on. Judges up there," he motioned to imaginary judges. "I spent a day in this costume talking with real actors."
Daniels then revealed that when suddenly everything changed for him, stating, "Then, at the end of the day, somebody flipped a switch backstage. The courtroom and the sky disappeared! I was in a giant television screen!"
"You were shooting on The Volume!" Carboni exclaimed.
"It was The Volume," Daniels confirmed. "I had never been in it before. It was so convincing!"
Carboni, who has put on the C-3PO mask before, agreed that if Daniels could only see out of "the pinprick" of eyesight. If the actor had went straight from wardrobe to filming, then it's understandable how someone could be tricked by the technology of The Volume.
"Thank you for understanding," Daniels finished with, "Of course, the next day, they turned it on, but then I knew the magic."
Star Wars has always been at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of film technology, and The Volume from StageCraft and Industrial Light & Magic is no different. It has revolutionized how these series and movies are filmed. Sure, there have been some complaints from the overuse of this new tool, but it cannot be denied that it is already changing the face of cinema.
It's a delightful story that The Volume was able to trick one of Star Wars' longtime actors, and Daniels sounded like he was delighted to learn "the magic."
