There have been many memorable side characters in the Star Wars franchise. They have ranged from all kinds of species and genders. One memorable group was the Mods gang from The Book of Boba Fett.

The Mods made their first appearance in the third episode, "The Streets of Mos Espa." They are a group of young cyborgs who lack work in Mos Espa, in turn initially being thieves to survive. But soon, the gang was recruited by Boba Fett as security guards and assistants to help keep the area safe. They were featured in the climactic battle of Mos Espa and were heroic in defeating the Pyke Syndicate. With Fett and Fennec Shand's crew at the end of the series, it seemed as if they were victorious in making Tatooine free and safe.

What made the group memorable was the youthful spin they put on the franchise. Not every part of the Star Wars world has featured teen or collegiate characters, and this group adds that spin through their storyline. They're a lost generation left behind, which is a new kind of narrative. Also, their musical theme has a very modern style to it.

Temuera Morrison, who plays Boba Fett, at D23 in 2022 spoke of the gang. "They add a lot of color and a lot of youthfulness to the series. Beyond that, they represent a new order—one in which Boba gives everyone a fair shake," said Morrison.

British actress Sophie Thatcher portrays Drash, one of the co-leaders of the gang in the series. Thatcher told the Hollywood Reporter of her role, "Aesthetically, it’s so cool, too. The costumes that they gave me had so much detail, and I’ve never worked on anything like that before."

Perhaps the greatest strength of the gang was the homage it pays to George Lucas and his work in the film American Graffiti. The 1973 movie was a box office hit and spoke of the youth and subculture featuring hot rods and having many characters speak of the generational changes they were going through. The gang's style and use of the mod bikes can be seen as a direct parallel to Lucas' work on the film. The chase seen in the third episode can draw a direct comparison to the hot rod drag races at the climax of the movie.

The characters, as cyborgs, are of different genders and different ethnic backgrounds, which also represents one of the greatest strengths of the franchise as a whole: That a group of diverse people can come together and defeat evil.

The Mods are a perfect representation of that.
