Chewbacca isn’t Han Solo's sidekick

What if Han Solo is Chewbacca’s pet, not partner? This playful take reexamines their bond, from age gaps to Rey’s quiet adoption.

For half a century, Star Wars fans have accepted a simple yet enduring truth: Han Solo is the rugged smuggler with a fast ship, and Chewbacca is his loyal sidekick. But what if we’ve had it backward this whole time? What if Han Solo is actually Chewbacca’s pet?

Yes, it sounds ridiculous. But stop for a moment and really think about it. Look past the blaster and the bravado, and the dynamic between Han and Chewie starts to look a lot less like “pilot and co-pilot,” and a lot more like “dog and human”—except Chewbacca is the one holding the leash.

Let’s break it down.

Chewie is clearly the adult in the room

Han Solo is the plucky, rude, yapping scoundrel. He runs his mouth. Constantly. He’s impulsive, arrogant, and more often than not, just making things worse. And who’s always there to clean up the mess? Chewbacca. How many times have we seen the Wookiee try to calm or deter Han with a growl and a sigh? And when Han doesn't listen? Chewie simply follows his clueless pet into the mayhem, rescues him from trouble, and tolerates his nonsense like a long-suffering golden retriever handler who knows better than to fight with his foolish pet.

That’s not a sidekick. That’s a responsible caretaker.

Look at the age difference

According to Wookieepedia, Wookiees have a lifespan pushing into the 400s. That's easily five times the length of the standard human life (not counting Han's being literally cut short by Kylo). And Chewie is over 200 years old when he meets Han. That’s not two peers coming together—that’s a grizzled old warrior (don't forget Chewie fought in the Clone Wars) adopting a naive young adult who needs constant supervision. Chewbacca witnessed Order 66, survived imperial enslavement, and saw entire civilizations rise and fall. Han? He’s still figuring out how to pay off his debts.

If anyone's the adult in this dynamic, it’s not the guy yelling "Never tell me the odds.” It’s the towering Wookiee next to him, rolling his eyes and rescuing Han from himself.

Loyalty beyond reason

Perhaps the most pet-like thing about Han is how loyal Chewbacca is to him. Life debts aside, Chewie sticks with Han through thick and thin, even when he’s brash, selfish, or doing something stupid (which is often). That’s more than friendship—that’s unconditional love. And let's be real, would you stick around with someone who has a fifth of your lifespan just because they saved your life? Probably not. But would you adopt an adorable puppy that thinks it's a ferocious wolf? Of course you would.

We're ride or die with our pets. If my dog (yes, it's a chihuahua, I don't want to talk about it) started a smuggling ring, I'd be right there with her. I'd be the muscle, and she'd be the brains. If she had a spaceship? Even better.

Chewie doesn’t need Han. He chooses to stay.

Chewie adopts Rey

After Han's death, Chewbacca goes through the standard grieving process pet owners endure. We cry, we mourn, but then we eventually adopt a new pet. Chewie does this with Rey. It’s not a new alliance as it's portrayed; it’s an adoption. He sees another scrappy, mouthy, young human who doesn't know which way is up. She reminds him of Han, and so he welcomes her aboard the Millennium Falcon, offers her a co-pilot’s seat, and by The Rise of Skywalker, he’s flying missions with her like an old guardian watching over a newly grown cub.

Just look at how he's staring at her. He's thinking, "Here we go again."

Han Solo may walk, talk, and shoot like a leading man, but when you look at his relationship with Chewbacca, he starts to resemble something closer to a space-faring emotional support human.

Chewbacca’s not Han’s pet—Han is Chewie’s. And honestly? That might be the most heartwarming twist in the Star Wars saga.
