Despite what you might have heard on the internet, the Rey Skywalker movie is not dead. In fact, it just tapped George Nolfi to be its screenwriter.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the writer and director has been brought on to write the film, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley in the role of Rey Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still on as the director, making her jump from documentaries to narrative features.
I'm going to say this again for the people in the back: It's perfectly normal for movies in pre-production to sometimes go through different writers. At one point or another, Damon Lindelof, Justin Britt-Gibson, and Steven Knight were writers on the New Jedi Order. There could be a number of reasons for pre-production teams to move on from a project. The reason why these make headlines is because Star Wars is such a massive thing. This is perfectly normal, so don't let the talking heads trying to generate revenue on YouTube tell you otherwise. For smaller-budget films, we just don't see the proverbial sausage getting made.
While I would have preferred a female writer for a chance to tell a woman's story, Nolfi is an interesting choice. He's best known for action and thriller films like the Jason Bourne films and Elevation, as well as the espionage television series Allegiance. However, he has done comedy and the 1950s period drama The Banker which starred Star Wars alumni Samuel L. Jackson. However, heists and thrillers are Nolfi's wheelhouse, which makes me wonder how this could apply to Rey's movie. Perhaps there is a dash of Andor with the New Republic meddling as a government in Rey's Order. That said, the New Republic government was decimated by the events of The Force Awakens, so we don't really know the state of things. That part hasn't been explored much in canon.
What we know is that the film takes place 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, in which Rey brings up a new group of Jedi under her tutelage. Outside of Daisy Ridley's involvement, we don't know anyone else who could potentially be cast as well. My fingers are still crossed for the return of Oscar Isaac and John Boyega.
With Star Wars Celebration Japan just around the corner in April, I'm sure we'll get a lot more details then.
