Giancarlo Esposito thinks there's more to Moff Gideon's story

Maybe we haven't seen the last of him after all.

When it comes to villains, Star Wars has always managed to create the most compelling, menacing ones possible. The actors who have played them over the years have only added to their near-perfection.

Giancarlo Esposito's role as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian followed the formula perfectly. A mysterious cloaked figure with an ambiguous past. Hungry for power, though his exact end goal and means of getting it start out quite unclear. By the end of the show's third season, Gideon both reveals his grand plan and falls prey to the heroic efforts of our protagonists. But is that really the end for the darksaber-wielding tyrant?

In a recent Empire interview, Esposito expressed interest in returning to the Star Wars universe as Moff Gideon one day. It doesn't seem like he'll make an appearance in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, but in a galaxy far, far away, you never know what could happen.

"I hope to be able to join that franchise again," he said, "because I think there’s more road for Moff Gideon.”

Esposito's interest in the character's backstory is just one of the many reasons Gideon made such a memorable antagonist. In the shattered aftermath of the Empire's demise, he truly believes power can rise again -- despite apparently needing Force-sensitive clones (of himself, of course) to do it.

The third season's heroes needed Gideon's death to reign victorious at the end of the final episode, and it created a nice clean ending to the so-called trilogy, knowing it would be a while before viewers were treated to another season. But it really is a shame that we might not see more of the character, at least in this series. This is Star Wars, though. Eventually, all villains must be defeated.

Except this is also Star Wars, where plenty of people have either turned out not to actually be dead or have somehow returned from death's grip. But I'll let someone else speculate on that one.
