Warning: There are minor spoilers ahead for Andor season 2, episode 10 and Into the Light by Claudia Gray.

During the flashbacks to Cassian Andor's childhood on Kenari in Andor Season 1, the planet had already suffered a tragic fate. The mining operations that took place there led to environmental collapse, and the only survivors were Cassian, known then as Kassa, his sister, and a group of other orphaned children.

The High Republic era novel Into the Light by Claudia Gray reveals that the exploitation of Kenari began more than 200 years before Cassian was born. Early in the novel, a negotiator from the Czerka Corporation comes to Kenari in an attempt to set up gas mines on the planet. It is made clear that the Czerka Corporation has a history of its technology leading to fatal incidents.

The people of Kenari are well aware of the Czerka Corporation's dangerous history and share that they instead plan on signing over the planet's gas rights to the Republic. Soon after this detail is divulged, the characters discussing the situation are eaten by a carnivorous plant-like species known as the Drengir.

While the novel then sees the Drengir leaving Kenari for Kashyyyk, the story does an effective job of showing how others were looking to exploit Kenari long before Andor. The Czerka Corporation is eager to profit from Kenari's natural resources and is willing to lie about "the highest environmental safety standards" in an attempt to get the gas mines built as quickly as possible.

Due to the negotiator being eaten and the plans to sign the gas rights over to the Republic, the people of Kenari avoid having their planet being exploited by the Czerka Corporation. This does not prevent Kenari's tragic fate, though, as the Republic's mining operation leads to the environmental collapse glimpsed in Andor.

It ultimately did not matter whether the Czerka Corporation or the Republic got Kenari's gas rights, as either way, the prioritization of profit over safety was going to lead to the planet's doom. The connection between Andor and the High Republic books, which are set hundreds of years apart, is surprising. At the same time, the connection is thematically fitting for both stories and adds more context to the backstory of Cassian's homeworld.

Andor Season 2, episode 10, "Make It Stop" features another fascinating connection to the High Republic era as well. The hospital where Luthen Rael is being held is called the Lina Soh Medical Center. In the Phase I and Phase III High Republic books and comics, Lina Soh is the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic. The Kenari and Lina Soh connections are perfect examples of how different Star Wars stories can connect and enrich each other despite taking place in drastically time periods.
