Does redemption or punishment await Sol in The Acolyte finale?
Episode 7 of The Acolyte, "Choices," showed us a fuller picture of what happened 16 years ago on Brendok. We saw the mistakes that Sol made, and now we will see the consequences in the season finale. Does redemption or punishment await Sol in the finale?
In the episode, we see that Sol's desire to have a Padawan, misinterpretation of the coven's practices, and impulsiveness in using violence against Mother Aniseya are in large part the reasons that led to Mae's turn to the dark side and teaming up with Qimir AKA The Stranger who is a potential Sith.
This is not the first time we have seen a Jedi's actions lead to everything going wrong. Anakin Skywalker's turn to the dark side in Revenge of the Sith was another example of selfishness leading to pain and destruction. The version of Luke Skywalker we see in The Last Jedi almost kills his nephew in his sleep which sets Ben Solo on the path to the dark side.
For both Anakin and Luke, they had a measure of redemption with their final acts as they sacrificed themselves for something greater.
What will Sol's fate be?
There is definitely an opportunity for him to redeem himself. Perhaps there is a way where he can send Mae towards the side of the light by accepting responsibility for his actions and apologizing. Perhaps together they can work to try to free Osha from Qimir so that she does not end up serving him the same way Mae was forced to. He may end up sacrificing himself to save the twins which would be poetic considering he chose to save Osha rather than Mae on Brendok. It would be fitting if he chose to sacrifice himself to save them from Qimir.
There could be another scenario where he gives into the dark side and seeks revenge on Qimir. The potential Sith killed all of those Jedi on Khofar, including his padawan Jecki. He may seek him out wanting to kill him as penance for what he has done.
Yet, he could also end up facing punishment from the Jedi Council for his actions which could tarnish the reputation of the Jedi. This could be a way to kill a Jedi without a weapon which Qimir implored Mae to do and which Star Wars Explained has expounded upon.
Redemption is definitely a well-worn path in Star Wars, so we may be due for a different ending for Sol where he ends up paying for his past mistakes rather than being able to make up for them in some way.
We will probably find out in the season finale of The Acolyte which airs on Tuesday on Disney+.
