Star Wars on the big screen started out with The Skywalker Saga films such as A New Hope and The Force Awakens and then expanded with spin-off tales such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While fans have 11 live-action films in total to watch on Disney+, there is much anticipation as to what will be the next live-action Star Wars movie to hit the cinemas The Mandalorian and Grogu

In a Twitter post from Scott Sanders from The Disney Cruise Line Blog that featured an interview clip with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, Favreau talks about what fans can expect with The Mandalorian and Grogu. The follow-up to the Disney+ debut series The Mandalorian, of which there are three seasons, will be the first big-screen appearance for every kid’s favorite ‘Baby Yoda’ aptly named Grogu, the cub to Din Djarin’s wolf who recently helped to reclaim Mandalore in the series.

Director Jon Favreau is enthusiastic about the opportunity to tell a brand new story on the big screen with these established characters from The Mandalorian, explaining that “part of what we’re setting out to do is to have something that rewards people who have been with the show since the beginning… been with Star Wars since the beginning.” He is excited to capture the scale and scope of a movie and also to introduce the titular characters to new audiences. With Grogu being placed firmly in the film’s title, he also teases the importance of Grogu’s character and that the audience will discover what he is all about.

While Rogue One, a story about the group of Rebels who successfully stole the Death Star plans we see Princess Leia giving to R2-D2 in A New Hope, eventually inspired its own highly praised spin-off series in Andor, The Mandalorian will be the first Disney+ series that spins off into a movie. There were rumors long ago that there were films in development for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett, which both have since had their own series instead. However, it is confirmed with a May 2026 release date that The Mandalorian and Grogu dynamic duo is the next to get their film. Where Rogue One technically takes place between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy, Grogu’s next journey takes place between the original and the sequel trilogy.

One thing that made The Mandalorian so popular as the flagship Disney+ series was that Jon Favreau captured the aesthetic and tone of the original trilogy so well. The long-form storytelling of the series allowed for fun side adventures and ‘monsters of the week,’ which lends itself to Dave Filoni’s style of storytelling, with his credits including classic animated series such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Pedro Pascal is the star who plays the face behind the armor of the main character, Din Djarin, and it will be great to see him in action at the movies when the latest Star Wars film comes out.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to release in theaters everywhere on May 22, 2026.
