'Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone' is the beginning of the end for The High Republic
By Meg Dowell
Since its opening stories at the start of 2021, The High Republic era of Star Wars storytelling has largely focused on the ongoing conflict between the Jedi and the Nihil. In an upcoming comic series set to release its first issue this October, the final steps toward victory are set to commence.
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III - Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone begins its four-part miniseries this October. Written by Daniel José Older with art by Paris Alleyne (first issue cover art by Jake Bartok), the miniseries will follow Jedi Knights Keeve Trennis and Elzar Mann as they attempt to communicate with those lost in the Occlusion Zone.
The miniseries is set during Phase III of The High Republic when the Nihil have overtaken the galaxy and devastated the Galactic Republic. The Nihil have set up a Stormwall to define their territory, which blocks anyone from getting in or out.
The catch is that the Occlusion Zone (the area behind the Stormwall) also blocks normal communications in or out as well. So those trapped behind the Stormwall are not only in danger in Nihil space, but they also don't have any means of contacting anyone on the other side for help.
Thankfully, several Jedi and their acquaintances have managed to access old technology that will allow messages to be transmitted and received between those trapped in the Occlusion Zone and those outside of it. The miniseries will focus on those messages and the people inside the Occlusion Zone fighting for survival.
This series is meant to serve as a connecting point between the stories released from Phase III so far and those set to release in the first half of 2025. The High Republic series will end with Phase III sometime in the spring of 2025.
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III - Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone #1 will release on October 9, 2024.
