“Nice, right? It spins in both directions.” – Sheev Palpatine to Kylo Ren concerning his throne in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special
From the forest moon of Endor to the “that’s no moon, round two” Death Star, we’re really moving to the end of both Star Wars: Episode VI—Return of the Jedi and this year’s Star Wars LEGO Advent Calendar. Day 21 brings us into the Emperor’s Throne Room on the second Death Star with the LEGO addition of the throne itself.
And, contrary to what Sheev says in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, the throne doesn’t really spin in both directions. It doesn’t really spin at all. Kinda just sits there. You know, like a chair. A LEGO chair.
But still—it’s a cool little build. And, like the STAP before it, I like how this build fits to scale with its corresponding minifigure. Palpatine can actually sit in it and sip his Sithmas coca. This isn’t an Endor bunker situation where our Endor Princess Leia minifigure could just squash the offending piece of infrastructure under her plastic boot.
I also like how all throughout the Advent builds we’ve been getting glimpses at other, larger Star Wars: Episode VI—Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary sets. (Marketing, am I right?) This year saw the release of the “Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama” build, in addition to the “Endor Speeder Chase Diorama.” A chair does not a throne room make—but it is an important piece, and we now have it.
With just a few days left, I think we’ll see a couple more builds to round out our journey through Advent and through the final installment in the original Star Wars trilogy. And here’s hoping for some Christmas-themed killer teddy bears…I mean, it’s on the cover of the box, right?
