Of all the things Star Wars fans are the loudest about, begging for Knights of the Old Republic to enter the official canon is well within the top five. The games, books, and comics technically aren't considered "canon" under Disney's ownership of Lucasfilm and its Star Wars IP. But a recent rumor has fans' hopes up all over again.

ComicBookMovie.com recently reported the rumor that the studio was finally starting work on a TV show set in the era of The Old Republic. There hasn't been any official confirmation that this is true, so speculate with low expectations. But the topic does open up an interesting conversation about the future of Star Wars as a franchise and the "new" eras it could one day explore.

Star Wars has spent the last four years expanding the universe into a completely new era of storytelling with The High Republic books, and the major success of this initiative could give future creators a lot of freedom to go back in the timeline even further. Technically, Knights of the Old Republic isn't canon, and at this point, it probably never will be. But that doesn't mean canon stories can't -- or won't -- be told in the Old Republic time period.

The Old Republic takes place thousands of years before The Phantom Menace, and Star Wars Legends stories have proven that there are many concepts to explore in an earlier era of the Jedi and Sith. Many fans want characters like Revan to be at the center of future stories, but there are dozens of new characters writers could come up with that yield similar themes. Just because it's not Revan doesn't mean it still couldn't be an amazing story.

Whether it's a movie, show, book series, or comic book one-shot, any exploration of an untouched era in Star Wars canon could pave the way for the introduction of handfuls of new characters brought to life by new creators who haven't had the opportunity to play in the Star Wars sandbox yet. It very well could happen. It probably just won't happen the way a lot of fans expect it to.
